EMPOWERING THE FUTURE: ALINEA FOUNDATION’S WEE-NORTH PROJECT AGM

The Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE-North) project is an Alinea Foundation’s Project supported by Global Affairs Canada to train women in the Northern Region of Ghana in Industrial trades like; welding, plumbing, carpentry, bricklaying, painting, and electrical engineering. These trainings equip the ladies with the needed skills to get a decent job and make an income. During their second Annual General Meeting the Field Manager, Dr. Nancy Drost, mentioned that the Wee-North Project which started in March 2020 and ends in March 2025 has successfully trained about 1,800 young women in various Industrial trades. She also mentioned that the last set of 200 young women are currently been trained. The Project has WEE-North Network in all 55 districts in Northern Ghana. The purpose of the network is to help the young women to stay connected and assist each other. It also mentors the girls on how to start their own businesses. Wee-North has established partnerships with both government and private sector institutions. These include some companies within the Canada Ghana Chamber of Commerce (CANCHAM), such as Landsar Developers and Silver Star Tower Limited, which have offered internship and employment opportunities to the girls. Dr. Drost appealed to stakeholders for support in acquiring tools for the young women who are still undergoing training. It is in this regard that Le Pels Ghana Limited with the support of CANCHAM generously donated welding machines, spirit levels, gloves, and other essential equipment to support the Wee-North Project. Mr. Haneef Van Keelson, the Business Development Manager of Le Pels who did the presentation expressed excitement for seeing young women excel in these industrial trades. He said Le Pels will be happy to provide them with internship opportunities in the near future.
