TVET Workshop by Canadian High Commission in Collaboration with CANCHAM

The Canadian High Commission and the Canada Ghana Chamber of Commerce collaborated to host a workshop aimed at improving Technical Vocational Training Education (TVET) to align with industry needs in Ghana. Held at the Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel on February 22nd, 2024, the workshop brought together 85 participants from various sectors, including government, industry, civil society, and training institutions. During the event, Mr. Kamil Mohammed, Country Manager of CPI Training, who was the keynote speaker at the workshop highlighted some outcomes from a TVET assessment conducted in collaboration with Saskatchewan Polytechnic in 2016. The assessment revealed that lack of modern equipment and outdated curriculum for teaching are part of the challenges that have hindered effective TVET Training in Ghana. The assessment also brought to fore the fact that inadequate government coordination of stakeholders and lack of recognized standards appropriate for industries have all contributed to this challenge. On the panel were; Mr. Isaac Animah from Regional Maritime University, Mr. Salah Kalmoni from Silver Star Towers, Mr. Theophilus Zogblah from Ghana Commission for TVET, Dr. Paul Frempong from Accelerated Oil and Gas Capacity Program, and Madam Rosemary Okla representing Women in Mining. The discussion was moderated by Mr. Andrew Maharaj, Senior Trade Commissioner of the Canadian High Commission. The panel focused on bringing together all stakeholders involved in TVET training to update the curriculum to meet with modern standards and industry requirements to elevate TVET in Ghana. Overall, the workshop provided a valuable platform for dialogue to enhance TVET in order to meet industry needs in Ghana.
