Ecobank plants trees across Ghana to mark World Environment Day

One of the largest banks in the country, Ecobank Ghana is planting trees across the country to mark World Environment Day.

The Bank is also set to collaborate with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly to plant trees in some parts of Accra in their effort to help keep the country green.

Managing Director of Ecobank Ghana, Dan Sackey, said the move reaffirms the bank’s belief in fostering sustainable development of economies, societies and the environment in which they operate.

He said this at the World Environment Day celebration organized by Ecobank Ghana in partnership with the Environmental Protection Agency, Forestry Commission Ghana, Zoomlion and Tthe Multimedia Group under the theme, ‘Planting Today, Protecting Tomorrow’.

“It is one of several initiatives. The mayor is working with lots of corporate bodies one of which is Ecobank to support tree planting exercises in our various localities.

“If Ecobank takes a portion of Accra, another bank takes another portion, together we will contribute resources to make sure that the tree planting project can be successful,” the MD noted.

The event also saw Ecobank Ghana, The Multimedia Group, Forestry Commission and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly plant trees at the St Thomas Aquinas senior high school in Accra.

In their effort to keep the country green, the government has committed over GH¢300 million through the Forestry Commission and the Youth Employment Authority to roll out a programme for the youth to plant trees across the country over a two-year period.

According to the CEO of the Forestry Commission, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, this programme will commence mid-June for people to sign onto and plant trees across the country.

“What we have decided to do with YEA is to employ over 15,000 people to help us with the reforestation with the view to greening Ghana again.

“And of the 15,000, we are oversubscribed even as I speak we have gone past over 40,000 people which demonstrate the interest of the youth to greening Ghana again,” he said.
